I ♥ UGLY: My Review of UBS3's Episode 1

Betty's back! With louder outfits, a power punch of changes, and fast-paced NYC as the backdrop, so far, our girl from Queens is off to a very good start.

There's something unique about the new season of Ugly Betty...it's quicker, it's bolder, it's brighter...

From the get-go, all our summer's anticipation of who-does-she-choose, are answered within the opening two minutes leaving plenty of time for Betty to encounter a whole sleuth of new shenanigans...from leasing a dump of an apartment, having a food fight with Kimmie (Lindsay Lohan), to being attacked by her supposed "power" animal, this season has fun written all over it.

What I love, is al though Betty's world is constantly changing - and this season seems to be going at an alarmingly fast pace - it continues to carry the same heart, energy, and authenticity as the previous two. Especially, the first season...with all the original writers back together storming up Betty's world, we can find solace in hilarious, campy adventures while shedding truth and human qualities at the end of every episode again.

One thing's for sure, the fashion has done a major upgrade. With Patricia Fields signed on once again, the clothing takes on it's own character and gives even more life and personality to everyone. And Betty just looks so much more put together even though she's made to be a thrifty dresser. I admit, because of Betty's wardrobe, she's inspired me to stand out more in the crowd.

And having Betty running around on the busy streets of NYC looks magnificent! It's like she's meant to be having unusual experiences parading around the clutter-filled sidewalks in her great ensembles...it's tacky, but it makes sense for the show! That's why it's SO awesome that the NYC backdrop is included, and it gives a whole new life, vibe, direction, and movement to the show. It's so speedy and big, like Betty's lifestyle.

I couldn't help but sympathize with Betty when she's purchasing her first NYC apartment...the market is competitive, expensive, and first come - first serve. It reminded me a lot of my experience and how long, spendy, and hard it was to get my place in the city that never sleeps. And I live for subliminal signs in things...like Amelie...and Betty is that way with the dove - her power animal - and how it was meant to be when one perches itself outside the window. I'm all about happenstance and timing, and it's just so cool and fitting how parallel I feel like my life is to hers.

The show's message at the end where Betty goes through a series of emotions where she feels like making all these personal changes and growth, and then feeling like a child again. I think we can all see ourselves in her with that, because as much as we want to grow up, there's an innate nostalgia in us all, where we are sort of in a cross-road, or limbo between being young and being old. I'm just real happy the show's original heart is shining through once more. There were some really touching moments between Ignacio and Betty.

It was adorable at the end when she's settled into her place after going through a series of unfortunate events and doubting her decisions, how she dances around her little place. It's her own small space in the world, where she's growing up and learning things on her own. I can't wait to feel that when I move. I know it will be hard, but it will be worth it. And I can't wait to dance around my apartment to cute music and feel like I'm independent...it'll feel very becoming.

So hats off to Ugly Betty! At the rate it's going, it looks like it's off to an amazingly fun season!

*PS. It was so fun to watch this after now being behind-the-scenes and knowing how it's made. It's still surreal that I met everyone and could recognize all the Modies in the background too. And it made me want to be back there ASAP!

Season 3 premieres TONIGHT!!!

Friend-iversary

Midnight Cravings

If you find yourself asking, "Whatever might that thing, be?" Why, it's only the most deliciously decadent truffle brownies via Trader Joe's!

Mere came into my room around 12:30 AM and some innate craving from within our very cores stressed the idea, and the importance of having Trader Joe's truffle brownies at that very moment in time. After seeing the wonder in her eyes, we exchanged Cheshire grins for no more than two seconds before beginning our expedition in what I'd like to call: "The Night of Wild Cravings!"

Were we having seizures? Am I pregnant? Is my period coming? Was it the moon?

I've always wanted to try this infamous brownies-from-a-box mix that Mom and Mere swear by...And if you're going to have a brownie...might as well go all out (butter! milk! eggs! ohmigod, delicious!), I say! It was so fun and liberating to be spontaneous, getting dirty in the kitchen with Mere, being hungry little night owls...it reminded me of yester years and childlike nostalgia...infectious laughter, warm lighting, the aroma of fresh baked brownies, the dunking glasses of milk...it felt great. I'm not so sure my stomach would agree after we split the pan at 1:30 AM...we *tried* to keep it semi-classy by incorporating the Le Pain coffee cups in the mix, but eating fudge-filled gooeyness at the witching hour never seems like pure class. More like ass. Hah!

But in the words of Ernestine Ulmer: "Life is uncertain, eat dessert first!"

Fall into Fashion

GIMME PLZE.

Vote No for Palin as VP

I strongly urge you to take 1/2 a minute to show that you don't support Palin ( I assume and hope for the sake of your ovaries if you have them...and the world).

PBS is doing a poll which asks if Palin is qualified to be VP. The rightwing has organized a yes campaign--and the "yes" is at the moment winning.Take literally 1/2 minute, go to:

here.

MODE AFTER HOURS

Gwadalaharahh:

I love these too.

GLAAD Study Reveals the Highest LGBT Characters Ever for 08-09 TV Season

Check it out.

In my opinion, I'm happy to have more LGBT characters on TV, but this 'report' was pretty creepy...it's like they're talking about aliens or products rather than people, if you get what I mean. Like, omgz it's a GAY! I wish it just was more normal - and not a big deal - to have gay, lesbians, even transgender characters on TV - just like it should be normal in real life.

Bryant Lake Bowl

I haven't bowled in ages but it was fun nonetheless. I just love the old-fashionedness of the place, the good-vibed crowd, and of course, any excuse to wear bowling shoes. I use to have this special telekinetic connection with the ball where I'd maneuver and twerk my head to control the direction the ball would go in. But my wizard skills did not pull through tonight...we played boys vs. girls and the ladies took the gold.

Unicorn Horn

Gin + ginger ale + cucumber = magical alcoholic potion!

*We were talking about how fun it would be to open a bar where it looks like something out of Diagon Alley and we'd serve imaginative, wonderous, alcoholic potions that would be reminscient of Harry Potter! It would be so neat to be creative in that way and have all the names be like "the werewolf" or "the goblin." It was just so great discovering The Unicorn tonight...it made me believe in humanity that there are other people like me that like to be imaginative and wonderous. It makes life more interesting and I think it's a reflection of how beautiful life really is.

Happy Golden Birthday, Sweet Meredy!

Happy, happy, birthday, from all of us to you, we're giving you a birthday, so we can party too!

It's Mere's 23rd (Golden) birthday tomorrow, but we surprised her tonight by celebrating at Bryant Lake Bowl. There were mock duck rolls, presents, and lots of love. So happy birthday, Girl!

Vegan Chocolate Peanut Butter Bar bliss

I am always willing to spend the $2.69 on this scrumptious dessert. I wish I could have one after every dinner and I will miss it so much once I move...

Luce Love

We went out to dinner at Pizza Luce to celebrate a lot of things that are going on with each of us individually...lots of changes, transistions, and excitement. It was good wine, good food, and good conversation. I love the food and atmosphere here and the mock duck is worth the trip alone.

Aamodt's Apple Farm

Today we went to the Apple Orchard and picked Sweet 16s! It was so fun and such a cute idea...it really kicks of Fall for me. I love how Autumn makes you feel...the crisp weather, the changing of the leaves, fashionable scarves, TV shows, and pumpkin pies...the pictures turned out really classic and timeless don't you think? And doesn't Mere look like she's in an Anthropologie ad?

Homemade Oatmeal

Um...my sister basically needs to become a baker or personal chef. Mere and I have been trying to clean out the pantry, and strech our wallets as of late, and so she created this warm, date-infused, flaxy delight this morning!!! I'll take seconds, please.

Engaged!

Anyone who knows me well, knows my firm belief about the sanction of marriage. A hetero-privileged right that seemingly incorporates itself into the privacy of our bodies and bedroom sheets. How it ultimately conforms and directs people's lifestyles, while completely neglecting an entire group of people...How it's the first stage of feeding into the "nuclear family" cycle that is embedded in our sub-conscious minds and daily routine...How it pushes basic family moral values and "the right way of living"...How it continues the ever-overwhelming economic plunge of capitalism....How it blahblahblahblah...

BUT, when there are two adorably, amazing, fantastic, people that were fortunate enough to cross paths in this lifetime...two people that fit so perfectly wrapped into one another's personality and well-being...two people's energies that ignite into one fleeting entity...THEN, I think it's a wonderful idea to tie the knot.

And the two people I'm describing are my beautiful, big sister, Alexis and my future brother-in-law Angel! He proposed to her this weekend in Duluth and they make me believe that I can find happiness with another person. They're so fricken cute it's almost sick. And now we get to celebrate the new chapter they are going to start together in their lives. I'm so thrilled for them and my sister truly deserves all the bubbly effervescence that she is currently feeling right now!

Congrats you two!!!

Applewine

Thank you Germany! You're cinema, musical artists, bubble bath rave parties, and applewine never cease to amaze me. Hopefully I will have the opportunity (and the euros!) to visit you someday. Until then, I'll continue to sip on your divine applewine.

GoLean Crunch

This is Mere and my favorite breakfast. It's a religious experience, really. And it's my sole motivation for getting out of bed in the morning. With just the right amount of soy milk, topped off with a bunch of fruit, and a cup of English Breakfast tea...and my day is started.

Now, I'm just biding my time, apartment hunting, and getting back to a few basics. Like, my breakfast. But it's great to plan a move to the east coast now, and to have something to look forward to.

Owl Bag

Check this out! I was perusing through Patina in St. Paul today and came across this little gem. An owl and a functional bag combined! Isn't that neat? I love quirky, colorful, loud accessories. I wish I had the $78.00 to pocket the darn thing, but I have an unforeseen apartment in Brooklyn to save up for currently. But I love the idea of wearing whatever you want, and personalizing your style. I would just about die if I saw this strapped across some one's shoulder.

So I was doing some online searching, and there are a plethora of owl bags. Why can't I have them all?
